Google has reportedly signed a classified agreement with the US Department of Defense that permits the use of its AI models for “any lawful government purpose.” This deal was disclosed shortly after Google employees urged CEO Sundar Pichai to prevent the Pentagon from using its AI technology due to fears it might lead to inhumane applications. If confirmed, this contract would align Google with other AI companies like OpenAI and xAI, which have also entered into similar agreements with the government. However, the deal includes provisions stating that Google’s AI systems should not be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight, although it lacks legally binding constraints on government decision-making. In response to these concerns, a Google spokesperson reiterated the company’s commitment to ensuring responsible use of AI.
