Cursor is partnering with SpaceX to enhance its model training capabilities for its coding model, Composer. Released less than six months ago, Composer has already seen significant improvements, including a 20x increase in reinforcement learning scaling with Composer 1.5 and advanced pretraining in Composer 2, achieving high performance at a reduced cost. The collaboration will utilize SpaceX’s Colossus infrastructure to overcome previous computational bottlenecks, allowing Cursor to further improve the intelligence of its models. Additionally, SpaceX has secured the option to acquire Cursor later this year, strengthening their joint efforts in developing advanced coding AI.
Cursor: Cursor is an AI coding platform designed for building software with agentic models, supporting multi-agent collaboration across local, remote, and cloud environments. It recently emphasized agent-first interfaces and autonomous features like cloud agents that generate commits independently. In this partnership, Cursor accesses SpaceX’s Colossus infrastructure to overcome compute bottlenecks and scale Composer model training.
SpaceX: SpaceX develops advanced rockets and spacecraft for space exploration. Through SpaceXAI, it provides Colossus, a massive supercomputer for AI training. SpaceX is partnering with Cursor to supply compute power for Composer enhancements and holds an option to acquire the company later.
Composer: Composer is Cursor’s agentic coding model tuned for software engineering with frontier-level intelligence and speed. Recent Composer 2 integrates reinforcement learning, continued pretraining, and simulated coding environments for improved performance. The SpaceX partnership enables Cursor to dramatically scale Composer’s training compute.
